Kate

The conversation with Luke left Kate feeling uneasy yet hopeful. The cloistered life she lived in the FEMA camp reminded her of stories of a nunnery. She had a small room with a single light, some books to read, and time in the gardens. She found that the terrible pain she’d experienced at Matt’s betrayal didn’t hurt so much anymore. At first, she’d expected him to visit or beg her to come back. He’d done neither. The Professor had taunted her with tales of the life Matt was living with the drinking and carousing with women, both guests and parkers. Kate wanted to laugh at The Professor’s obvious attempts to drive her away from Matt and to him. He’d even gone so far as to tell stories of girls in his classes with whom he’d had dalliances and how they sought him out. It was a clumsy way of boasting of his sexual prowess. Kate nearly laughed in his face, but she was scared that his creepy attempt at wooing her would eventually turn into something worse.

Despite all of that, Kate sensed hope creeping back into her life. She could now see her relationship with Matt for what it was, and while there was regret, it took on more of a clinical feel than the deep emotional pain. She was sorry for the pain she’d put her mother through, yet after digging out of her emotional pit, she could now see that she and her mother could reconcile. Her deepest pain was for her father. The Professor had shared pictures, satellite photos, and official reports of the western half of the U.S., the badlands. It was horrible, and while she believed her dad could do anything, getting out of there and all the way back east in his physical condition was surely too much to expect. For a fleeting moment while talking to Luke, she prayed there might have been news of her dad, yet that would have been too much to hope for. More likely, Luke had talked to Ellie or stashed a canoe somewhere to try and break out. Kate would be ready.
